Manchester City are guilty. What happens now?

Why it hits youThis is the biggest disciplinary case in English football history. What happens next sets the rules on money, ownership and titles for the next decade — and decides whether the league's champions keep what they won.

In September 2026 an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of almost all 115 Premier League financial charges. No punishment has been set, and City are appealing.

The Facts

What everyone agrees on

Before anyone spins it. Every one of these is checkable.

  • No punishment has been set. Sanctions are a separate hearing with no date, and the largest Premier League-era points deduction to date is 10 points. Dragon Football ↗

  • City lodged an appeal on 1 October 2026. It goes to a private Appeal Board and the outcome stays confidential until publication is permitted. Dragon Football ↗

The case against City

Finally — proof of what rivals suspected for years

To critics and rival supporters, the verdict confirms a decade of suspicion. The commission found City used what it called “sham” sponsorship deals to inflate revenue and get around spending limits across nine seasons. If that's true, the argument goes, the titles won in that period are tainted and nothing short of stripped trophies and a serious points penalty would fit the scale of it.

City's defence

A flawed opinion we will overturn on appeal

City say they are “disappointed and surprised” and that the ruling contains “clear material errors.” They lodged an appeal on 1 October 2026 and point to earlier wins, including a 2024 arbitration over sponsorship rules that both sides claimed. Their case: nothing is settled until the appeals are exhausted, and the club has denied wrongdoing throughout.

The neutral read

Guilty on the facts. The punishment — and whether it sticks — is the real story

Neutral analysts note the commission upheld breaches from 2009/10 to 2017/18 and most of the failure-to-cooperate charges. But no sanction has been decided: that is a separate hearing with no date set, and it can range from a fine to a points deduction, stripped titles or even expulsion. With a confidential appeal already lodged, the final outcome could be a long way off.

The Blindspot · what the headlines skip

“Guilty” isn't the end — it could be years from over

The appeal is confidential, and any sanction is a separate decision that can also be appealed. Anyone telling you City will be relegated or stripped of titles next week is guessing.

The Blindspot · what the headlines skip

No punishment has actually been handed down

The headlines jump straight to relegation and stripped trophies. The commission has ruled on guilt, not penalty — those are different hearings, and the second hasn't happened.

A lot of the detail came via newspapers, not the official record

Early specifics were reported by The Athletic and The Times before full official confirmation, and City dispute the findings. The complete reasoning wasn't all public at first.

This rewrites the rules for everyone, not just City

Beyond the City-bashing and the City-defending, the case tests how the league polices owner spending and sponsorship for every club — and its own credibility. That's the part that outlasts the result.
